"The Gettysburg speech was at once the shortest and the most famous oration in American history...the highest emotion reduced to a few poetical phrases. Lincoln himself never even remotely approached it. It is genuinely stupendous. But let us not forget that it is poetry, not logic; beauty, not sense. Think of the argument in it. Put it into the cold words of everyday. The doctrine is simply this: that the Union soldiers who died at Gettysburg sacrificed their lives to the cause of self-determination -- that government of the people, by the people, for the people, should not perish from the earth. It is difficult to imagine anything more untrue. The Union soldiers in the battle actually fought against self-determination; it was the Confederates who fought for the right of their people to govern themselves."

China has warned a top member of the US Federal Reserve that it is increasingly disturbed by the Fed's direct purchase of US Treasury bonds
Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank, said: "Senior officials of the Chinese government grilled me about whether or not we are going to monetise the actions of our legislature." "I must have been asked about that a hundred times in China. I was asked at every single meeting about our purchases of Treasuries. That seemed to be the principal preoccupation of those that were invested with their surpluses mostly in the United States," he told the Wall Street Journal.

Grantham: Expect Years Of Economic Drag
Though he expects the economy will look better for a couple of quarters, GMO head Jeremy Grantham says that the long-term imbalance between overproducers like China and overspenders like the Unites States will be a multiyear drag on growth. "We're not rich, and we're undersaved and underpensioned," Grantham told Smart Money. "Those will be a real brake on economic growth."
Rosenberg: U.S. Faces Double-Dip Recession
The U.S. economy appears destined for several years of weak growth and high unemployment that leave it vulnerable to a recession relapse after the massive dose of government stimulus wears off. While tepid growth looks likely to resume late this year and build modestly into 2010, the credit bust has left households and businesses unable or unwilling to borrow and spend as freely as they did before the crisis.
Who will pay for mounting federal and trade deficits?
Our children
and grandchildren, yes. But the running trade deficit gets a little trickier.
Here's a critical slant on the Obama administration's projected record $1.7 trillion deficit this year: "Debt Day." That's the day each year when total government spending exceeds anticipated total federal revenues. Republican House Leader John Boehner recently calculated that Debt Day in 2009 occurred April 26, just six months and 26 days after the fiscal year started Oct. 1, 2008. Washington already has run out of money only halfway through the year, he noted. The federal budget deficit – $4.7 billion a day if you spread it over the entire year – is one of two major flows of red ink for the United States. The other is the deficit in international trade, which currently is running about $1.5 billion a day, down from the more than $2 billion a day during recent boom years.

In case you’ve already forgotten about the whole “rolling up their sleeves” press conference fiasco, it was a made-for-TV political event that took place earlier this spring up in Spartanburg, S.C. Basically, two fake Republican Senators stood up with their colleagues and pretended to be fiscal conservatives, but then turned around and voted with the State Senate’s big government RINOcrat majority when it came time to actually do what they said they were going to do. Who were the two sellouts (at least as far as this latest example of South Carolina “Republicans” saying one thing and doing another is concerned)? Sen. Shane Martin and Sen. David Thomas - and by listing their names again here we guess that means you can consider yourself reminded.
